In writing the article, Lessing holds the position that women’s bodies are central to their social positions in a fast-changing world from male domination to gender equality and feminism. In doing this, she explores the issue of how women use their bodies in trying to gain power as well as analyzing the benefits and limitations of the strategies they use to achieve this.
Lessing has also tried to show how resistance and accommodation are interwoven and how strategies based on the body have limited utility (Dellinger and Williams, 1997). She also goes ahead and shows us how women can use their bodies as a source of power and control others within the society, especially men to achieve certain goals within the male dominated society. Thus, Lessing argues that we cannot be able to understand the nature of power, resistance and accommodation in women’s lives without having a closer look at a woman’s daily bodily disciplines of femininity.
