Currently, it would be unlikely that the government could shut down the U.S cyberspace due to the lack of centralized connectivity. The country’s internet network is distributed widely and even the government could only manage to block a part of it. However, there is still the possibility that a big chunk of cyberspace could be knocked out.
Nonetheless, Instead of passing such an outrageous bill, the government needs to work closely with involved parties such as service providers, and those in both the private and public sectors in cases of any cyberspace attacks. An internet shut down in the U.S would paralyze many daily operations leading to negative consequences for the nation’s economy, security, health, and democracy. Nonetheless, any plausible authoritarian law needs to be discarded in order to minimize the potential for an internet shutdown.
