Another important aspect that had an impact in US culture and society has been slavery. The first slaves brought into the country from Africa, were set in the newly established colonies to work in the different plantations. They worked hard, and for long hours, giving all they had for their masters. The payment for their hard work was punishment and in some cases, death.
Many authors took it upon themselves to write about this period of US history. It was important and monumental, and much as slave labor helped to develop the landowners, and ultimately the nation, the pain, shame and suffering that the slaves endured is like a stain upon the face of the nation. Nonetheless, many advocated for the abolition of slavery which was done on January 1, 1863 when Abraham Lincoln signed the ‘Emancipation Proclamation’ that saw the end of slave trade.
